“The first time that I came to DBBC I was worried and a bit nervous because my English was not very strong and I was a newcomer to this country - but people here were very helpful and kind and gave me enough self-confidence to continue the work and I made good progress.”

Living the Difference

Living the Difference logoLiving the Difference Is a Heritage Lottery funded project that is researching the lifestyles of young people over the last 50 years; comparing the living conditions between young people in urban and rural areas.

Participants will document (among other things) what it was like living on housing estates in Bolton and in rural areas of Cumbria in the 1950s and each following decade up to the present day.

Speak Up!

In September 2010 we received a grant from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to work on a joint project with a group in Devon. This project, Speak Up!, is for two years.

Aune Head Arts – the south-west’s leading rural-centred contemporary arts organisation - is running the project with both DBBC here in Bolton and Soundart Radio in Devon.

During the development of this project we have found that young people, whether on the estates of Bolton or in rural areas of Devon, all have the same problems and the same aspirations. This project is developing links and common bonds.

Speak Up! encourages young people to say ‘Hi’ to the world around them through the medium of radio. The community radio station  Soundart Radio 102.5fm will play a major part of this communications network.

Speak Up! Will use many of the new methods of communication so that young people in the two areas will be able to share their experiences and develop friendships.
