Bolton Market Radio
DBBC provides a service to Ashburner Street Open Market under the banner of 'Bolton Market Radio' - (BMR). During the week we provide automated music to the market complex. On a Saturday we provide a live broadcast from 9.00am to 5.00pm which includes music, information, national and local news, sports updates and competitions. The service is run by young students who have come from local schools and colleges, some doing media courses, and we have a core of dedicated professionals who help them on a voluntary basis. This type of opportunity is unique, as to be able to broadcast to a live audience for a media student is a great challenge and one that our students relish. Over the last 7 years we have had a number of successes. Carl Hartley, possibly the best known, as he has progressed from presenter on 'Oasis 101 in Tenerife' and '‘The Bay Radio' at Lancaster via Lakeland Radio to a managerial position at Rugby FM. Others have had shows on Tower FM.
Just recently Linzi Nuttall won a prestigious award for her work in hospital radio.
This Saturday service is purely voluntary and overseen by one of our trainers, Jamie Blatchley, who is himself also involved in hospital radio.
Darryl Morris
Article from Bolton News - 29 November 2006
A SCHOOLBOY will become the voice of the next generation when he is heard by more than 40 million radio listeners across the world. Darryl Morris, aged 16, has been named the BBC's Young Voice for a schedule of youth programmes to be broadcast by the BBC World Service.
The Rivington and Blackrod High School pupil will take to the airwaves on Saturday as the joint winner of a nationwide schools competition to find exciting young broadcasters to anchor the BBC World Service's Next Generation season, which will tackle young people's issues.
The student was shortlisted from nearly 100 nominations and came out top of a poll on the BBC website.
Darryl hosts shows on his school radio station, Rivi FM, and Bolton Market Radio, which is broadcast to Saturday shoppers at Ashburner Street. And he has had expert training from Jon Briggs - known to millions as the voice of the BBC's Weakest Link programme.
He said: "This is an amazing opportunity. I hope it is the start of a big career for me. I'm very excited that I'm going to be heard by so many listeners."
