“I am very proud to have had the opportunity to work and complete my course at DBBC. It has given me confidence and I have met some lovely people.

I feel comfortable here and I am looking forward to being a volunteer!”

Local Radio Broadcasts to Bolton

In 1997 a 28-day broadcast took place in preparation for bidding for the local licence - ‘VARIETY GOLD FM’’ when a group of over 30 enthusiasts put together a formidable effort.

In 2004 a licence was issued in the name of ‘YOUR RADIO’ and the volunteers put together a 10-day broadcast with the aim of promoting events and activities available to young people during the summer holidays.

The support for this was remarkable and DBBC were delighted when Ken Dodd agreed to record all the station idents and Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley from Coronation Street) agreed to host two request shows. Other support soon followed and the broadcast was privileged to boast such names as Nick Robins and Allan Beswick from GMR, Bernard Wrigley, local MPs and Councillors - and even ‘Lofty the Lion!’

Local media studies students got involved and produced and presented their own shows.

In 2007, from 2nd to 11th April, DBBC - supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund - presented Roots FM - a radio broadcast based on Bolton’s heritage. Again local students were involved in interviewing, producing and presenting their own shows. In 2008/2009 DBBC received a new Heritage Lottery Grant to research women’s lives during the Second World War with a project called “How Granny Won The War.” Students interviewed local women and recorded their stories. This work resulted in the editing and production of a one hour audio CD and also allowed students to gain a far deeper understanding of the lives and experiences of women who lived through that period in our history.

If you would like a copy of the CD please send cheque or postal order made payable to DBBC to the value of £5.00 (to cover costs and postage) to:
